Bladeless IntraLase Method for LASIK

All LASIK procedures involve first creating a flap on the outer surface of your eye that is lifted so the LASIK excimer laser can work beneath it to reshape your cornea and produce better vision. While the first step is often done with a hand-held surgical device called a microkeratome, the IntraLase Method uses a special laser to painlessly produce a series of microscopic bubbles just where the eye surgeon needs them. These bubbles can then be used by your eye doctor to create and raise the flap, which is specifically created to the diameter needed and with its angles precisely determined.
VIDEO DESCRIPTION: The IntraLase method can produce a flap for a bladeless LASIK procedure that can correct vision difficulties.

What Are the Benefits of Having the IntraLase Method for my LASIK Procedure?

The IntraLase Method produces many beneficial results for those who choose it over having a blade produce the flap. The use of tiny pulses of laser light programmed by your eye doctor for the unique shape of your eye gives your doctor the ability to create the best flap for your individual case. Since the laser used to create the bubbles is precise and programmed, the flap is free from the irregularities a hand-held blade can create.

Also, those who have chosen the IntraLase Method have a better chance of obtaining 20/20 vision. They also are more likely to have better vision overall, or in the one eye that received the method over one that did not and have improved vision at dusk or during the night or in other low light conditions.

How Does the IntraLase Method Differ From Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)?

While both methods provide an alternative to using a microkeratome to create the flap, only the IntraLase Method uses a laser to aid in creating a flap customized for your eye. Since PRK involves gently scraping the cornea with a laser, it can lead to more pain and more medication after your eye surgery.

Creating the flap using the IntraLase method takes no more than half a minute and nearly eliminates all the complications that can impair your vision.

Is the IntraLase Method Right for Me?

Generally, anyone who can benefit from LASIK surgery can have the 100% bladeless IntraLase Method performed. You can only receive it, though, and take advantage of its benefits if you and your eye doctor agree. An eye surgeon with the Reingold Eye Center can perform this Method and would be delighted to discuss it with you.
