Sunil Bhandarkar, M.D.
Dr. Sunil Bhandarkar was born and raised in Long Island, New York. He attended Bayport-Blue Point High School. After high school, he completed his B.A. in Biology from Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1995. After additional pre-medical studies at the University Of Pennsylvania, Dr. Bhandarkar attended Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts where he received his Medical Doctorate (M.D.). During his medical school training, he was awarded Honors in his anatomy, neurology, pediatrics, medicine and ophthalmology rotations. After medical school, Dr. Bhandarkar completed his internship in internal medicine at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, New York.
For his ophthalmology training, Dr. Bhandarkar attended the renowned New York Presbyterian Hospital of Cornell Medical College in Manhattan, New York. Here, Dr. Bhandarkar completed 3 years of surgical ophthalmology training in cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation, corneal transplantation, strabismus (eye muscle) correction, diabetic retinal laser therapy, and retinal detachment repair. Dr. Bhandarkar also participated in research regarding retinopathy of prematurity and laser management of choroidal melanoma the findings of which were presented at the Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology (ARVO) annual conference. At the completion of his training, he received a special certificate for his 3 years of excellent service.
After residency, Dr. Bhandarkar came to Santa Monica where he completed a Cornea Fellowship at the Sinskey Eye Institute with special focus on LASIK and multifocal intraocular lenses and participated in research which was published in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He is certified for both the Intralase FS and Visx S4 Lasers for LASIK. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and American Medical Association. Dr. Bhandarkar is Board Certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and specializes in Cataract and LASIK surgery.
